Looking Back...
Moving Forward
For general information, contact Jim Wilcox (541) 543- 5986 or email Jim.
Almost a decade ago, a community discussion about transportation priorities culminated in the adoption of TransPlan, the transportation plan for the Eugene-Springfield metropolitan area. Since then, some things have changed and others haven't. As local governments begin work on updating transportation plans, it is important for the community to look back to plans from the 20th Century before moving forward in the 21st Century. Our town hall was an early opportunity for the public to highlight what they most care about and what needs to be addressed. Thank you for joining us.
Special Thanks to Mayor Kitty Piercy and Rep. Terry Beyer and these Event Sponsors

6/22/09: Update. We are planning for Looking Forward Town Hall II. Thanks to everyone who helped make this a success, with over 60 people attending we had great input on future directions. Here are some facts about who attended:
To assess the respondent's professed preferences for transportation options (including modes and objectives) the sample of key words was randomly split, with each rater receiving half of the total response packets. This split half approach to determine internal reliability also reduced rater cross contamination, as each rater did not know the collected responses of the other.
Once each rater had identified recurrent key words, these were then compared in an A/B comparison to determine common themes. The three most common transportation objectives; integrated, connectivity and multi-modal, formed the central theme for connecting the additional recurrent modes of bike, bus and walking. In addition, the final most common themes of efficient and safe were integrated into the diagram.
From this process it is clear that respondents seek an integrated, multi-modal, efficient and safe transportation system that integrates walking, biking and busing.
How do we get there?
Making transportation choices requires trade offs. Achieving a system as envisioned by the respondents may mean supplanting a reduction in VMT (Vehicle Miles Traveled) through an integrated transportation system. Identifying the willingness of respondents to accept trade offs to achieve their goals will be one goal of Town Hall II.
