The new financial rescue package passed by Congress contains a fringe benefit for bike commuters that covers expenses for a bike, bike parking facilities, shower facilities, and bike maintenance. These benefits amount to $20 a month tax free employee benefit toward these bicycle related expenses This program can be combined with the State of Oregon Business Energy Tax Credit allowing employers to deduct up to 35% of similar expenses from a State tax liability. For nonprofits and agencies without a tax liability, the provision allows them to pass the deduction through a for-profit, which then returns a percentage of the amount back to the nonprofit...a great way to thank a supporting business. These two programs, in addition to the inherent savings from commuting by bike, provide a significant savings for employees and employers. When combined with the health benefits, environmental benefits and increased employee productivity, it is rare that a company can increase their productivity while lowering expenses.
